Our Soulful Design Process

2. Schematic Drawings

It’s one thing to talk about your space, but seeing is believing. We’ll review all of your options and refine the layout utilizing computer-assisted design, creating a space that fits your needs, personality and expected usage. Our detailed schematic drawings go well beyond the sketches many other designers provide, so you can truly get a feel for your project and its potential.

3. Material and Finish Selections

The perfect space requires more than just a great layout—it requires getting every single detail right. From building materials to flooring to the color on the walls, our extensive library of materials allows us to work together in real time to make the space feel just right for you.

We’ll also help you select furniture, fixtures and equipment to match your style and budget.

The right interior designer will create a functional space that reflects your tastes and sensibilities, instead of something that merely fits their own preferences. That’s why each MAY Designs project starts with a complimentary consultation and a lot of questions—so we can learn about your style, your needs and the scope of work.

Should you decide to move forward after our consultation, your project will follow these steps in our Soulful Design process:

1. Let's get started!

Once we’ve gotten to know each other, we’ll put together some design options based on our initial conversations and images you've shared. Even if you’re planning a major renovation, we find it’s best to start with a designer rather than an architect, because our skills overlap in several areas, including floor plans, interior elevations and other details such as tile and wood selections. This will give you flexibility during the early part of the process, when you are most likely to have significant changes. Making those changes before an architect has created site plans, energy calculations and the other services they provide will save frustration, time and money.

4. Design Development

It’s important to take some time to review and reflect before starting the physical transformation of your space. Do you feel good about your choices? Do you want to make changes to colors, materials, furniture or more? Now’s the time. We’ll create detailed, finalized drawings and ensure you’re exactly where you want to be before moving ahead.

5. Bidding and Construction

Whether you have a contractor in mind already or want to consider one of our trusted resources, having schematics and technical drawings in hand makes it easy to get accurate bids. And our experience means you’ll have an expert on your side throughout the bidding process.

We build a relationship with each contractor — in fact, one just left us a review lauding our “realistic, team-oriented approach” —and remain actively involved to manage your project until you are satisfied. Once construction is done, we will help put the finishing touches on your new space to complete the transformation from vision to reality.
